What is URL Slug Generator?
A slug is the human-readable part of a URL after the domain. It appears in search results, gets copied into messages and emails, and is one of the few parts of a URL a person actually reads.
Short, descriptive slugs are easier to share and read. They are a minor ranking signal at best — but a URL full of query strings and IDs looks untrustworthy in a search result, and that affects whether people click.
Best practices
- Keep it short — three to five meaningful words is plenty.
- Use hyphens, never underscores or spaces.
- Include the primary keyword naturally; do not stuff it.
- Once a URL is published and indexed, changing it costs you unless you add a 301 redirect.
- Avoid dates in slugs for evergreen content — they make it look stale.
Frequently asked questions
Should I remove stop words from slugs?
Usually yes for length, but not when removing them makes the slug read strangely. "how-to-fix-slow-website" is clearer than "fix-slow-website" if the page is genuinely a how-to guide.
Can I change a slug after publishing?
You can, but the old URL will 404 and lose any rankings and links it has earned unless you set up a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one.
How does this handle accented characters?
They are converted to their closest plain equivalents — "café" becomes "cafe" — because non-ASCII characters get percent-encoded in URLs and become unreadable.
